The Cost of Television
In this episode; thoughts on the time sucking boob tube!
It’s easy for me to say a home entertainment center isn’t going to bring me enjoyment. But what about the average person? What comes to my mind is the adage; what you own, really owns you.
There is the cost of the telvision, the electricity to run it (even when it’s off), the satellite or cable, all the gadgets that go with a TV; a DVD, VHS, stereo surround sound, remote(s), batteries. Then multiply that by all the set ups you have in your home. How much are you spending, $100, $200 a month?
That’s a lot of money in feed. That’s what you’re doing, feeding the entertainment center, keep it going and growing. It takes time to work for all that money to feed the beast. The next time you’re at work, think about how many hours are spent paying for the beast, and then think about what you could be doing if you weren’t there at work.
Commercialism. I’m not even going to call it subliminal advertising, it’s blatant, in your face, buy-this-or-else, advertising. I’ll spare you my soapbox. For now.
See if you can free yourself from the bondage of television. Most of us don’t remember a time with out a television except when the power went out. But there was a time when television was rare. People didn’t sit, bored to tears, they did things.
Don’t sit there pouting staring at the blank TV screen. Go do something. The idea is to see what it is like to have that extra time. Don’t think of it as a sacrifice, your not doing without TV, you’re freeing yourself from it.
Do something fun, something you don’t usually have time for. Some ideas; go outside, play ball, walk the dog (or cat or fish), watch the sunset, play tag with the kids. If the weather is not good; board games, tie-dye, crochet or knit, play music, write. Try to stay clear of work; you’ll get the work done anyway, you always do. This is a fun time to relax, do something you enjoy, use to enjoy, or have thought you might enjoy.
Let us know how it went. Did you go through withdrawals? How long did you go before you turned the television on? What did you do with all your free time? Did you really miss anything with the television off?
Have fun!
Peace!
